Come In
Early one morning I heard a voice calling
a sound so sweet to my ears
come in brother, come in brother
come in, you’re welcome here
Thank you I said as I shook my head
I’m just passing through here today
come in once more as he opened the door
and said you’re welcome here anyway
the coffee’s hot & the cake fresh baked
won’t you come on in
come in and join us, come in and join us
first service is about to begin
Now all the same folks asked my name
and where was that I come from
gathering together, come in brother
come in, you’re welcome here son
Shara smiled, ‘San Diego’ she said
as she took my hat and my coat
‘you must know my cousin Jimmy Flynn’
I said sorry ma’am I don’t
Now traveling this road without a home
the story’s sad and kinda funny to me
regrets and grievances are your best friends
and keep you good company
now as I remember the choir sang fine together
preacher shook my hand at the door
her comforting words washing over me
I could feel my spirts soar
now early this morning I hear church bells calling
a sound so sweet to my ears
come in brother, come in brother
I said come in, you’re welcome here
I said come in brother, come in brother
come in, you’re welcome here
Don’t Cry Easy
I don’t cry easy
you can ask every one of my friends
and all my forgotten exes
If it bothers or perplexes
history shows it don’t last long
I hate sad songs
and these days my eyes are hardly ever dry
and baby you know the reason why
now I’m counting the days
till the pain goes away
and sets my aching heart free
I don’t cry easy, I don’t cry easy
The stars fill the sky so lovely
but God must of made this night for two
‘cause all I feel’s alone
I wanna call you on the phone
but history shows you don’t answer
it would be a disaster
and these days my eyes are hardly every dry
and baby you know the reason why
now I’m counting the days
till the pain goes away
and sets my aching heart free
I don’t cry easy, I don’t cry easy
Is there More?
Today the sky’s as blue as blue can be
each cloud is where it’s meant to be
look up my love and you will see
Is there more that you can ask of me?
Drifting easy in the autumn breeze
leaves fall away from white oak trees
where they keep the winter’s company
Is there more that you can ask of me?
Is there more that we can ask
any more that’s meant to last?
I will stand by you I do foresee
is there more that you can ask of me?
If I take you to a quiet place
feel your breath softly on my face
when I look deep in your eyes
I will tell the truth, I will not lie
Yes, love is not a simple game
maybe for some but all the same
rough edges turn to cobblestone
Worn smooth by time and time alone
Is there more that we can ask …
Your heart is like a Faberge
fragile and priceless and locked away
the world can see how well it shines
But I wait for you, I stand in line
Yes, you can be alone and in a crowd
and that’s well known, I’ve shown you how
there are some things you will never know
but if you ask my love, I’ll tell you so
Is there more that we can ask..
Yes love it is a living thing
it’s born one day in the light of spring
and goes until there’s dust from bones
then in that spot another flower grows.
Is there more that we can ask
any more that’s meant to last?
I will stand by you I do foresee
is there more that you can ask of me?
I will keep you constant company
is there more that you can ask of me?
Lighthouse
The sun rises,
my heart is clean
You are with me Lord
in a beautiful dream
and then I’m drifting
out here on my own
and then I’m lost Lord
so far from home
You are my lighthouse
You are my Lord
You are my lighthouse
You are my Lord
You are my beacon
You’re never out of sight
You are my lighthouse
Your rooms are filled with light
Up ahead now
there’s a peaceful shore
You are with me Lord
I don’t need anymore
Burden is Light
The morning started out okay
I thank the Lord, go on my way
pour some coffee in a cup
savor the flavor – I can lift it up
My yolk is easy and my burden is light
you’re walking with me
everything’s alright
my yolk is easy and burden is light
you’re walking with me
and everything’s alright
the day of working is okay
move some problems out of my way
use my mind some and my heart
I am satisfied doing my part
My yolk is easy and my burden is light
you’re walking with me
everything’s alright
my yolk is easy and burden is light
you’re walking with me
and everything’s alright
Have I told you lately
that I’m with you, all the way
The day ended up okay
in the quiet I kneel to pray
I kiss my sweet love goodnight
resting next to me, I can hold her tight
My yolk is easy and my burden is light
you’re walking with me
everything’s alright
my yolk is easy and burden is light
you’re walking with me
and everything’s alright
Frequency of Love
You got me so ecstatic baby
since you come around
I tuned out all the static
and tuned into your happen’ sound
you got me really going baby
you’re every preset on my dial
you’re my only station honey
there can be no denying
We’re on the frequency of love
I don’t need no cable streaming
threw out that old satellite dish
you give me a warm feeling honey
you’re my only wish
I don’t need no messenger service
messing up my phone
it just makes me nervous
I prefer to chat with you alone
We’re on the frequency
the frequency of love
now your sound is never loud baby
so I listen real low
you got me so proud honey
you let me into your show
you’re my lovely symphony
you’re a rockin’ band
you’re sweet music to my ears
I know you understand
We’re on the frequency
the frequency of love
When I’m flying real high
on some transatlantic flight
way so high up in the sky
but you’re never out of sight
We’re on the frequency
the frequency of love
you and me, on the frequency of love
Sadie
I’m not the kind of man
who makes friends easy
I keep to myself
but it was different with Sadie
She smiled and said
she was real pleased to meet me
we laughed and drank
then she leaned in to kiss me
Me and Sadie shared my bed before too long
brother there was comfort in her arms
my lunch she’d fix
with a love note hid somewhere
when I come tired
my Sadie, she’d be there
she’d smile and say
it was real good to see me
we’d laugh and drink
then she’d lean in to kiss me
Brother I’ve had some good love in the past
me and Sadie said it would last
Sadie didn’t say
why she left
just disappeared one day
like the smoke from her cigarette
now she may be the kind
who just needs to be free
it may just be something missing in me
Sadie, I’ll remember you all my years
way past the end of this trail of tears
Sadie, I’ll remember you all my years
way past the end of this trail of tears
You’ll See
You left me waiting by the phone
at the far end of alone
but no one else will do
I’ve been trying to track you down
looking all over town
but you don’t seem to miss me around
but you will turn back to me
and that fine day, you’ll see
that I wanna be your guy
I know you so shy
let me get back to you
there’s so much I have to say
took for granted everyday
now all I can do is pray
that you will turn back to me
and that fine day, you’ll see
you’ll see, you’ll see
you’ll see, you’ll see
please stop and think it over
please stop, cause it’s not over
Living on a Volcano
Now many years have passed my friend
since I came to live on this island
it’s just my way, drifting with the tides
I woke up on every beach and harbor side.
I cut cane, picked coffee beans by hand
cleared the lava fields of this rich land
I washed glasses down at Don’s Mai Tai Bar
and at night slept on the beach beneath the stars
Living on a volcano
the jungle grows fast
but the day goes slow
living on a volcano, living on a volcano
into the fire, hell, I was surely thrown
and I did not help myself none, I know
beneath this sacred ground it’s always burning low
always churning, always ready to blow
Living on a volcano
the jungle grows fast
but the day goes slow
living on a volcano, living on a volcano
now the morning air is sweet and still
the good Lord’s light pours over the hill
about a mile past where the dirt road ends
that is where you can find me my friend
Living on a volcano
the jungle grows fast
but the day goes slow
living on a volcano, living on a volcano
Tsunami
You and me holding hands
our feet buried deep in the sand
gazing out at the peaceful sea
but we know what’s coming
the tsunami
You and me keep it all unsaid
buried somewhere deep in our heads
and everything’s a calm as it can be
but we know what’s coming
the tsunami
and when it rolls in
everything gets swept away
the strongest foundations crumble
and just drift away
and it’s never very stormy
no it’s always a sunny day
so you don’t see it coming
it just happens that way
Now can you hear
that howling sound
the dogs are making quick
for higher ground
and it’s time to hold on tight to me
‘cause we know what’s coming
the tsunami
And when it rolls in………..
Say the Word
Darling say the word
just say I can come home
I do apologize, for leaving you alone
my heart will not accept
when you say that it’s too late
I hope you realize
it’s your heart that holds my fate
‘cause it just don’t feel right
baby say the word
Darling say the word
it’s true, I’m begging you
please let your heart forget
though I know it’s hard to do
I know it seems absurd
after so much down the line
but it never felt as good
as the time when you were mine
‘cause it just don’t feel right
baby say the word
every night I close my eyes
I dream about the past
we’re back together hand in hand
and all that’s good will last
Darling say the word
I’m driving back to town
past all the old places
I got the car top down
when I pull up in front
and I climb upon your stairs
will you open up the door,
will I see you standing there?
‘cause it just don’t feel right
baby say the word
Darling say the word
and by the good Lord’s grace
when I come home to you
I’ll see your loving face
and feel your arms around me
like a pill to stop the pain
wash all the dirt away
like a good hard rain
‘cause it just don’t feel right
baby say the word
it just don’t feel right
baby say the word
it just don’t feel right
baby say the word
Making a Change
I woke up on the right side of the bed
blew out all the ghosts living up in my head
had me a cup of coffee or two
made my bed, put on my shoes
I don’t feel the same, I’m making a change
I’m making a change
I’m gonna rearrange
I’m making a change,
I’m making a change
I’m gonna find me a brand new tribe
follow ‘em down to a place where I can’t hide
I’m gonna find me a treasure map
dig down deep to where it’s at
I don’t feel the same, I’m making a change
I’m gonna rearrange
I’m making a change,
I’m making a change
I’m making a change
Now I’m gonna take you to Jakes
and buy you a coke
a fat cheeseburger, some fries
and a vanilla float
and when I’m walking down the street
smiling at everybody I meet
I don’t feel the same
I’m making a change
I’m gonna rearrange
I’m making a change,
I’m making a change
I’m making a change
Open for Business
Now I’ve been away too long
singing the same sad song
stuck here in the deep freeze
looking up, yeah, from down on my knees
Now I’m hanging a sign on the door
from the ceiling to the floor
shouting out on my Twitter account
I’m open for business and more
yeah my heart, it was bankrupt
it hurt so bad, I just gave up
locked the doors, turned out the lights
took a long vacation from the working life
Now I’m hanging a sign on the door
from the ceiling to the floor
shouting out on my Twitter account
I’m open for business and more
The majesty and glory
I opened my eyes, now I can see
Now I got a brand new story
a warehouse full of fresh inventory
opened the doors, lights bright above
I’m open for business baby and I’m looking for love
I’m hanging a sign on the door
from the ceiling to the floor
shouting out on my Twitter account
I’m open for business and more
Took a Trip to New York City
Took a trip up to New York City
where my people were welcomed
out ‘neath the Statue of Liberty
shining in the sun
I strolled along the Hudson
found my name etched in the wall
I traced his steps out on Ellis island
where my grandfather risked it all
So sprinkle some salt for flavor
shine some light for love
smile on your neighbor
look to the heavens above
at home the rains fell steady
neighbor’s hillside’s giving way
I’m shoulder to shoulder and ready
pass the sandbags down this way
I pick up the daily paper
I go online
you got your opinion neighbor
and I got mine
So sprinkle some salt for flavor
shine some light for love
smile on your neighbor
look to the heavens above
So I turn on the TV
scratch my head, circle back
the spin is getting thin my friend
or maybe they’re just alternative facts
It’s like a carnival mirror
when you look away
the distortion’s getting nearer
but the truth’s always clear as day
So sprinkle some salt for flavor
shine some light for love
smile on your neighbor
look to the heavens above
Victory Church
Overalls all caked in paint
Elvin’s helping out ‘till late
you know he’s married
but he swears he ain’t
he’s dropping off a box of toys
for the poor kids, girls and boys
we’re meeting at the Victory church tonight
Well it’s people helping people
down at the Victory Church
it’s people helping people
wherever you may search
It’s people helping people
grab your hammer and your nails
we’re building this house and
together we can’t fail
Now say hello to Pastor Jim
and his little brother Tim
now we don’t say it,
but Jim don’t look like Tim
we’ll gonna read a little Bible verse
come on open up that purse
we’re meeting at the victory church tonight
Well it’s people helping people
down at the Victory Church
it’s people helping people
wherever you may search
It’s people helping people
grab your hammer and your nails
we’re building this house and
together we can’t fail
Now most folks we don’t have that much
we know better, it’s just
everyone can give
and this world is such
tonight it’s meatloaf and peas
everyone gets some, even the least of these
we’re meeting at the victory church tonight
Well it’s people helping people
down at the Victory Church
it’s people helping people
wherever you may search
It’s people helping people
grab your hammer and your nails
we’re building this house and
together we can’t fail
Now I stand before you tonight
a righteous sinner, man’s that’s right
head full of trouble
a hard battle to fight
but I’m headed to the surplus store
50 mouths to feed, maybe more
we’re meeting at the Victory church tonight
Well it’s people helping people…
Calm and Comfort
There have been many hills to climb
on this long and winding road
and many rests along the way
to unburden the heavy load
and with all the joy and sadness
that is life can hold
when I can calm and comfort you
is when I know
There have been many other things
that have occupied my time
and more than a few wrong turns
on the bye and bye
but with all the joy and sadness
that this life can hold
when I can calm and comfort you
is when I know
When I can calm and comfort you
with all the love this man can show
when I can calm and comfort you
is when I know
There’s peace that fills me
as light hits your face
and I know I’m in the right place
It’s quite surprising in the end
that what turns out to matter most
the little twinkle in your eye
when I hold you close
and with all the joy and sadness
that this life can hold
when I can calm and comfort you
is when I know
When I can calm and comfort you…
Polaroid (50 Years)
They met in high school,
he tutored geometry
at first sight he laughs,
he knew it was chemistry
so many good times, so many tears
husband and wife celebrating 50 years
another Polaroid slides across the screen
drifting by like some Hollywood dream
Dressed in his Navy whites
and she, his lovely bride
he’s holding her tight
as they were joined side by side
Every Thursday it’s choir,
she’s an alto, he’s a bass
swimming when the kids were small
at their favorite summer place
another Polaroid slides across the screen
drifting by like some Hollywood dream
it’s a little bitter and it’s a little sweet
watching their lives sliding by
nearly complete
now it’s the last song
they’re dancing slow
“Sunrise, Sunset” from their
favorite Broadway show
friends and family surround
worth more than any King’s gold
and they’re still loving together
even as their growing old
another Polaroid slides across the screen
drifting by like some Hollywood dream
it’s a little bitter and it’s a little sweet
watching their lives sliding by
nearly complete
Love Wins
I know your soul is sick
and you don’t know which way to turn
I see you’re out of tricks
with no more bridges left to burn
well, love wins, love wins, love wins, love wins
You say that you can’t live
in such an empty place
the things you can’t forgive
are written in your pretty face
well, love wins, love wins, love wins
come on and take my hand
with you I’ll make a stand
all down the line
together we can begin
I’ll say it again, oh love wins
And so, it’s true my friend
when it’s all said and done
love wins in the end
you can ask anyone
love wins, love wins, love wins…
